Projective-Identification in Couple Psychotherapy and Adult Pairs

CE Hours 3

About this live event

The theory of “projective identification” – that we become entangled with another’s unconscious wishes and desires in situations of emotional need – originated with Melanie Klein and was further developed by Carl Jung, Wilfred Bion, Thomas Ogden, and Robert Caper, among others. This course will introduce the concept and the ways it applies in couple therapy to understanding enmeshment and breaks in trust, especially in Dialogue Therapy for Couples. The course will also clarify when and how this manner of unconscious communication becomes a problem and how it can be broken through so that partners and other equals can create a “mindful gap” or an “emotional space” in which they are able to see and hear each other as separate people. The course will be especially useful for couple and family therapists.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain projective identification as it applies to dyadic functioning between equal adults
  • Explain how projective identification creates obstacles in trust in adult pair bonding
  • Recognize and explain projective identification functions in both idealization and hostility

Target Audience

This educational activity is intended for behavioral health professionals, including Psychologists, Social Workers, Counselors, and MFT's.
